Seeking Pluto’s Frigid Heart | 360 VR Video | The New York Times

Set foot on an alien world, three billion miles from the warmth of the sun.

On July 14, 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft zipped past Pluto, scanning the dwarf planet in unprecedented detail. Using data from that flyby, The New York Times created a seven-minute virtual reality film. Fly over Pluto’s rugged surface, stand among the icy al-Idrisi Mountains and touch down in frost-rimmed Elliot Crater.

The film was produced in collaboration with the Lunar and Planetary Institute and the Universities Space Research Association.

Note: This is a VR video — a brand new kind of video that gives you a sense of depth in every direction so you feel like you’re actually there.

For the full effect, watch it in a Google Cardboard viewer:

5/12/2016 — 360 Degree Camera Test — Outdoors — birds , squirrels and blue skies

Move your mouse around on the screen, and control where you view as the video plays!

If you’re on a smartphone.. download the youtube app made by google from your app store (for free) and then move your phone around to “see” around the video. Looks really cool on a phone, tablet, or using VR glasses / goggles.

Just a quick 10 minute test of one of my new Kodak SP360 cameras to see how well it works on it own (standalone) at exact ground level looking up.

This was paid for by viewer donations! Thanks to all who gave to the fundraiser! Still ongoing for 2 more days (the month long fundraiser ends on May 15th).

A great thanks to all who have given over the past 6+ years to help me grow my operation, and give me the time to do daily research on multiple topics.

If you like my research, and video content – and want to give to the operation , here is a secure link to the fundraiser:

As to one of the benefits of awesome new way of producing videos….. 🙂 ….. About half way through the video, birds land all around the camera below the bird feeder, and a squirrel came up close and personal — overall this camera gives a pretty good view of the surrounding area , the sky, and good close ups surrounding the camera.

Normally, capturing birds is relatively hard , as the birds move out of the field of view of normal cameras when they walk or fly. The 360 view captures all around at once… obviously the benefits go far beyond “bird watching”.

Weather and sky observations, even night time star movement could be tracked much easier with a 360 view. Just a few options that would be cool to explore with this form of video making.

Additionally, mounted on a drone, this camera setup would be awesome. The drone might be my next purchase if the cameras work out well over the next few months.

I’m going to explore many avenues with these videos, and surely we can expect better results depending on how far this can be used or developed.

I have two of these cameras (Kodak SP360 HD) .. this is just a test of 1 on its own… the cameras can be used together to make a full 720 (dual 360) view in HD.

1 camera seems to work find on its own. Hopefully, when the dual housing arrives, 2 cameras will be better than one when put together…. then (when viewing) the video can also be seen in VR (virtual reality) when viewed through the new Oculus goggles, or on new “VR” smartphone apps.

I don’t have a pair myself, but I’ve heard the “cardbord” VR glasses used with smartphones will work with these new 360 degree view videos. 🙂

I’ll for sure be using this setup for outdoor severe weather coverage, 360 degree view radiation tests, and coming experiments this summer.
