Microsoft HoloLens Review, mind blowing Augmented Reality!

Microsoft HoloLens review, AR- mind blowing!
My expectations were already high, but when I tried the HoloLens, my mind was blown at how outrageously good it is.

I show you Microsoft Office 365 running through my HoloLens, accessing Excel and Word as Holograms. I then access Microsoft Edge for web browsing plus YouTube, just incredible; AR for business.

I run some extremely cool HoloLens apps such as LSrD (wow, imagine the DMT trips you could simulate on this!) and then Galaxy Explorer to see our Solar System including the Sun and Saturn at very close up range.

I then run a Beta 3D simulation of a shark, once again, absolutely incredible. I zoom into the shark hologram whilst it’s swimming around my living room.

It’s without doubt the hand gestures need some work as it’s hard to manipulate objects when at a distance. The only other problem is the field of view is small, but once this has been resolved through future iterations of the HoloLens, AR is set to change the world.

Then, to go a step further with my futurist hat on, consider the Softcell Lens (AR in a contact Lens) and the EyeTap and the future really looks exciting, I see AR impacting every part of our lives. If we want it to of course.

I also link to my blog in the video where I discuss AR street dating, volumetrically captured video conferencing, AR shopping, facial and emotion recognition, and much more;

I discuss emails, text messages and phone calls delivered through AR, the replacement / death of mobile phones and the personal computer. Death of the mouse & keyboard, eye-tracking, field of view, Adaptive Focus (Magic Leap) and even, imaginary friends!

Project Tango – Virtual and Augmented Reality for Mobile Phones (Ubiquity Dev Summit 2016)

We’re working to make every smartphone a Magic Window into the world. See how a sofa looks in your living room. Know which exit to take when you get off the subway. Play with a virtual cat that jumps on your lap. With a few extra sensors and some software magic, your device understands the world the same way you do. Eitan Marder-Eppstein discusses the technology behind these applications and how to take advantage of it.

Genesis Augmented Reality Trading Card Game

Mobile Augmented Reality has never been used in such an engaging way before. As children, we’ve all pretended – trying to take part in imaginary worlds full of might, magic and adventure, where victory was a product of your own colossal will and epic journeys were daily occurrences. We’ve painstakingly yearned for the creatures in Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh to come to life and allow us to personally experience the grand events that transpired on the TV show. As with everyone who experienced a similar yearning we ended up having to simply settle and rely on our mediocre imaginations to transport us to these new world.

As time wore on we ultimately grew up, and these dreams were made dormant, sadly placed on shelves and left to gather dust.

Forgetting these dreams of ours until we realized that enough was enough.

The team at Genesis decided that these dreams were meant to be pursued, not forgotten.

Live Texturing of Augmented Reality Characters from Colored Drawings

Link to publication page:

Coloring books capture the imagination of children and provide them with one of their earliest opportunities for creative expression. However, given the proliferation and popularity of digital devices, real-world activities like coloring can seem unexciting, and children become less engaged in them. Augmented reality holds unique potential to impact this situation by providing a bridge between real-world activities and digital enhancements. In this paper, we present an augmented reality coloring book App in which children color characters in a printed coloring book and inspect their work using a mobile device. The drawing is detected and tracked, and the video stream is augmented with an animated 3-D version of the character that is textured according to the child’s coloring. This is possible thanks to several novel technical contributions. We present a texturing process that applies the captured texture from a 2-D colored drawing to both the visible and occluded regions of a 3-D character in real time. We develop a deformable surface tracking method designed for colored drawings that uses a new outlier rejection algorithm for real-time tracking and surface deformation recovery. We present a content creation pipeline to efficiently create the 2-D and 3-D content. And, finally, we validate our work with two user studies that examine the quality of our texturing algorithm and the overall App experience.
